The Community Members’ Police Academy assists the Erie Police Department in meeting one of its primary goals of enhancing partnerships by engaging with community members through education and community outreach events.

The academy was designed to provide a medium for community members to understand why police do the things they do, encourage community members to become active in volunteering to help police their own neighborhoods, and to heighten ownership in the Erie Police Department. The Community Police Academy offers the following:
- Building searches, including shoot/don’t shoot scenarios
- Criminal law and civil liberties education
- Community Policing
- Introduction to prosecution, restorative justice, and the courts
- Investigative techniques
- Officer survival
- SWAT team demonstrations
- Vehicle stops and DUI investigations
Details
The 9-week academy meets Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m. at the Erie Police Department (1000 Telleen Avenue, Erie) beginning March 1.
Participate
All participants must complete an application of intent and pass a criminal background check. Applicants will not be allowed to participate unless a release of liability and indemnification agreement has been signed and turned in prior to the start of the academy. Must be 18 to participate. Ages 16-17 may attend with a parent who is also attending.
