Natural Gas Flaring Test
Today mid-morning, SiteWise, an Xcel Energy contractor, will produce a brief natural gas flare near a regulator station at East County Line Road and Maxwell Avenue in Erie. This work is the final step for commissioning a new 6-inch distribution line so that it may be put into service. The flaring is necessary in order to “pickle” the gas line, a process during which the odorant Xcel adds to the gas supply is brought up to a level that allows Xcel to smell the gas in the event of a leak.
SiteWise expects the flaring to take between 20 and 30 minutes, and the flame to be between 10 and 20 feet high. SiteWise has communicated the flaring operation to local authorities.
