Board Approves Schofield Farm Open Space Master Plan

Schofield Farm Open Space Master Plan

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the Board accepted the Schofield Farm Open Space Master Plan.  In 2017, the Parks & Recreation Department was requested to explore the various ways that the Town’s Schofield Farm Open Space could be preserved and utilized to best benefit the residents of Erie.

To complete this task a contractor was hired and worked closely with staff throughout this project by holding various stakeholder meetings and public input sessions throughout 2017. Conceptual plans were created with various levels of activity addressed in each of the alternatives. Sections of the draft master plan were presented and discussed with the Board of Trustees at a Study Session in October 2017. Now that it is accepted, the Schofield Open Space Master Plan will be a useful tool to guide preservation and development efforts for this unique open space site.

Board Approves Resource Central Contract

Since 2004, the Town of Erie has partnered with Resource Central (formerly, Center for ReSource Conservation), to provide water conservation services to Erie residents. During Tuesday night’s meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the 2018 contract which includes:

  • Slow the Flow Outdoor Inspections: This program is designed to educate people about how to water more efficiently with their sprinkler systems. During an irrigation inspection, a trained auditor travels to a residential or large property, performs a thorough inspection of the sprinkler system, and spends time educating homeowners or property managers about what to fix on their sprinkler stem and how to water more efficiently.  In 2017, 133 residential inspections were performed in Erie.

  • Water-Wise Landscape Seminar: This seminar is to help educate residents about best management landscaping practices that promote water conservation.  In 2017, 48 people attended the Xeriscape 101 seminar that the Town of Erie hosted at the Erie Community Center.

  • Garden In A Box Program: One of the most popular programs that Resource Central offers is an array of do-it-yourself Xeric garden kits, created by professional landscape designers for sun, shade, and everything in between. These plant-by-number gardens can have a significant conservation impact-especially when used to replace turf! The garden designs range from $74-$159. In 2017, the Resource Central sold 116 gardens to Town of Erie residents; 80 of those were purchased with the $25 discount offered by Town of Erie.
