Town of Erie News & Announcements

Oil & Gas Operations Update

During a news conference last week, Matt LePore – Executive Director of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) announced that they were assisting the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District in their ongoing investigation into the home explosion that occurred on April 17, 2017 in Firestone.

LePore stated that Anadarko’s announcement last week that they shut-in approximately 3,000 wells was based on the operator exercising an abundance of caution and was not because of an enforcement measure enacted by the COGCC.

Based on testing, data and available information, the COGCC believes there is no immediate threat to the environment or public safety associated with oil and gas operations in the neighborhood where the explosion occurred.

Since last week, the Town of Erie has been in contact with the three largest oil and gas operators in Erie: Crestone Peak Resources, Anadarko Petroleum and Extraction Oil & Gas.

According to Crestone, all of their facilities, including flowlines have been tested for strength and leaks in the past two years. If Crestone determines any repairs are required based on these inspections, they initiate repairs and report their findings to the Town as required by their Operator Agreement with the Town.  View these monthly reports here.  Crestone informs us they are in the process of compiling all the integrity test data and will share that with the Town as soon as they have it compiled.  Crestone at this time, does not anticipate shutting in any of their well sites in the area.

According to Anadarko, they have shut in 65 producing horizontal/directional wells within Erie’s incorporated limits.

According to Extraction, they have a monitoring and testing program in place for all of their wells and facilities.

  • All well flow lines are pressure and leak-tested annually by a third-party. These results are audited by the state and Extraction’s audit pass rate was 100 percent.
  • The COGCC has not advised any operator to shut in wells
  • Extraction is in communication with COGCC and are adhering to their guidance.

If and when the Town receives additional information, we will share it with the public.  To learn more about oil and gas operations within the Town of Erie, please visit our website and sign up to receive notifications.
