Smart Meters

Your Water Meter is
About to Get Real Smart!

In the next few weeks, the Town of Erie Department of Public Works will begin replacing residential water meters with “Smart Meters” as part of our efforts to reduce water waste throughout the community and increase efficiency.  Once installed, your new Smart Meter will give you access to your water consumption data, allowing you to view your usage activity and gain a greater understanding and control of the water you consume on a daily, monthly and annual basis.

Some of the customer benefits include:

  • Online and Smart Phone access to your water consumption information

  • Easy to understand tracking of your water usage patterns and billing

  • Set alerts to email and/or text you when a potential leak is detected

  • See the results of your water conservation efforts within 24 hours

  • Monitor your usage through the month to better manage your water budget

The way your utility bill is sent to you and the way you pay for charges will not change.  What will change is that you will have access to detailed usage activity.  Additionally, these Smart Meters will provide the Town a more efficient way to manage meter readings, provide a higher level of customer service and allow our Utility Billing staff to answer questions about your water usage more effectively.

In January of this year, the Board of Trustees approved upgrading all existing meters in the Town to the new Smart Meter technology. The replacements are scheduled to be completed within a 10 year cycle.  In 2016, DPW has scheduled approximately 800 replacement water meters, and an additional 100 meters available to residents via a lottery.  All new homes will have Smart Meters installed at the time of construction.

Beginning the week of August 15, 2016 a contractor, National Meter and Automation, will begin replacing approximately 800 water meters that are 10 years or older.  This process should take approximately 12-14 weeks (weather permitting).  There will be little interruption to service when the meters are installed.  The contractor will knock on resident’s door to inform them that their water will be shut-off for approximately 10-15 minutes.  If the resident is home and that timeframe does not work, they will coordinate a time that does.

Once the meter has been installed, a door hanger will be left on the resident’s front door.  This will provide more information on how to create an account to view your water usage and how to download the smart phone app.  Your meter will continue to operate as normal regardless of whether or not you download the app.
