Bag and Compost Fallen Leaves

Cool autumn weather means that leaves are falling! Unfortunately, many of those leaves are ending up in storm sewer systems and waterways. As leaves breakdown, they introduce harmful nutrients into our creeks and rivers. Excess nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorous cause algal blooms and lower oxygen levels in waterways. Help protect our waterways by NOT pushing leaves into the street*. Instead, bag the leaves (preferably in paper bags) and compost the leaves (and pumpkins) at the Erie Recycling Center during two composting event Nov. 12 and 20 – or any day of the week at the Recycling Center! Visit the Leaf Composting webpage for more information.

*Many of you may have received an email from your HOA specifically asking you to push leaves into the street to be cleaned by Town street sweeping. This is NOT something the Town advocates and is not healthy for our waterways, please do not push leaves into the street.
