Parks & Recreation Department Earns Re-AccreditationThe National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) announced that the Erie Parks & Recreation Department earned re-accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The department received this distinguished accomplishment during the NRPA’s 2022 Best of the Best Ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Currently, there are only 199 agencies in the United States who are accredited. Only 10 park and recreation agencies within the State of Colorado, including Erie, hold a CAPRA accreditation.
CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. This mark of distinction indicates that an agency has met rigorous standards related to all areas of operations: Administration, Planning, Organization, Human Resources, Finance, Programming, Facility and Land Use Management, Risk Management, Public Safety, and Evaluation. National accreditation through CAPRA is an extensive multi-year process, which includes the completion of an application and detailed self-assessment report, a site visit by a committee of leaders in the park and recreation profession, and a final assessment completed by the agency and CAPRA. Accreditation is valid for a period of five years.

Learn About the New “Safety Stop” Bill Passed This YearIntersections are by far the most dangerous locations for bicyclists. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, more than 72% of reported crashes between bicyclists and motorists were intersection related. This summer, the ‘Safety Stop’ bill was signed into Colorado law, making it legal for low-speed conveyances (cyclists, scooters, etc.) to treat stop signs like yield signs and proceed through intersections after slowing to check traffic. This is even more reason to pay close attention at every intersection. Read more in the Police newsflash item.
