Town of Erie News & Announcements

What to do with leaves?

Sending fallen leaves to the landfill creates methane – a powerful greenhouse gas. But composting leaves helps build healthy soils! So join other Erie residents in free leaf (and pumpkin) composting events at the Erie Recycling Center on Saturday, Nov. 6, and Sunday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Please bring proof of residency. Also, beginning Monday, Nov. 15, residents may bring other yard waste (including branches) to the Erie Recycling Center. For more information, visit the composting website.

Did you know that leaves impact water quality?
• Leaves are a significant source of phosphorus to urban stormwater.
• Nearly 60 percent of the annual phosphorus yield can come from leaf litter in the fall.
• Timely removal of leaf litter from streets can reduce phosphorus load by 80 percent.
• Leaf removal is one of a few options available to reduce dissolved phosphorus
