Curbside Recycling and Composting Study

Curbside Recycling and Composting Study

During the most recent Board of Trustees Study Session, LBA Associates, a firm specializing in solutions for sustainable waste diversion, presented the results of a five-week analysis of viable options to divert waste from the landfill. In particular, LBA’s feasibility study concentrated on curbside recycling and composting, including the widely adopted ‘Pay As You Throw’ pricing concept, and evaluation of the pros and cons of the single hauler method compared to the universal recycling ordinance approach. The Board took no action but advised Town staff to initiate a comprehensive community engagement and outreach campaign. For more about the concepts, view the study session presentation.

EyeOnWater

EyeOnWater

Since 2016, the Town has been replacing residential water meters with Smart Meters that conform to all industry standards set by the American Water Works Association. Once installed, a Smart Meter collects water consumption data and displays it on the EyeOnWater tool. Customers can view water usage on a daily, monthly, and annual basis. The EyeOnWater customer portal can also help identify water trends and potential leaks and personalize a water savings plan.  Today, more than 60 percent of Erie’s meters are Smart Meters. Learn more about the EyeOnWater tool on the Smart Meter webpage.

Melting snow

Protect Waterways After Snowstorms

The Town’s very own Stormwater Coordinator would like to share some simple tips to reduce pollutants, making their way into Erie’s waterways through storm drains after snowmelt:

  • Secure trash and recycle can lids to keep litter from blowing into the snow
  • Pick up pet waste to prevent excess bacteria and nutrients from being carried away by melting snow
  • Shovel snow from sidewalks onto vegetation so it can soak in, rather than flowing onto the street

If using a deicer, apply according to the instructions as soon as snowy or icy conditions arise. Remember, deicers break the bond between ice and pavement to make shoveling easier. They do not evaporate the snow or ice, so adding more does not eliminate the need to shovel.
