A good neighbor is mindful of how their sound activities (music, repairs, gatherings, etc.) might affect their neighbor's quality of life. An even better neighbor is aware of the Town of Erie's 'Unlawful Noise' ordinance, which details the decibel sound levels per premise type, time of day, specific days of the week, and exceptions.
Violations
Below is a sampling of violations of the 'Unlawful Noise' ordinance or state statute (C.R.S. 25-12-103):
- Amplified sounds exceeding 55 dB(A) during the day can be heard inside a home or from 25 feet away.
- The use of tools (power, pneumatic, etc.) exceeds 50 dB(A) after 9 p.m. or before 7 a.m. and can be heard inside a home or from 25 feet away.
- A gathering of people or a motor vehicle (exhaust, engine, brakes) creating noise that exceeds the allowable decibel levels.
Report
If you witness or hear 'Unlawful Noise' and feel safe doing so, please share these ordinances with the violator and ask the violator to consider quieting the activity. If this is unsuccessful, please call the police department’s non-emergency number at 303-441-4444 to report unlawful noise violations. Either a Code Enforcement Officer or Erie Police Officer will contact you.
