Erie residents can help control the mosquito population in our community by not over-watering lawns. Sprinklers that soak the sidewalks create runoff into the storm drains which fills ditches, leading to standing water. Standing water at culverts in ditches is the primary breeding grown of mosquitos, especially those that carry West Nile virus.
The hot temperatures we’ve been experiencing and standing pools of water are the perfect conditions for Culex mosquitos (those that carry West Nile virus). The Town of Erie has contracted with a local vendor (Vectra Disease Control Inc.) to control adult mosquito populations. Let’s all work together to keep our mosquito population down.
