Town of Erie Launches State’s First Green HOA Certification Program

Arapahoe Ridge HOA first to be recognized in the program

The Town of Erie’s Sustainability Division under the Public Works Department is providing homeowner’s associations (HOAs) with a way to become as resilient as possible while also focusing on economic and social vitality for residents. The Green HOA Certification Program is the first of its kind and builds off the state’s Green Business Certification model.

The program works like a scorecard, helping HOAs to become more sustainable by reducing energy and water use, recycling and composting, and providing an integrated and healthy, built environment. Two additional categories deemed fundamental are 1) sound financial practices and 2) a robust governance model. Many HOAs are operating under bylaws that are decades old and don’t adequately represent contemporary principles. By refreshing a governance structure to one that values diversity and inclusivity, transparency and engagement, all involved are best able to showcase strengths and results in a more representative decision-making process.

“Businesses and HOAs can focus on similar gains - environmental, economic, and social - despite HOAs operating under holistically different business models,” said Tyler Kesler, Sustainability & Water Conservation Specialist. “We created a scorecard that reflects both HOA and business-minded goals, and celebrating achievements in sustainability and resiliency as they are reached.”

With a triple bottom line that encourages environmental, economic, and social health, each of the scorecard’s eight categories may be assessed by HOAs. The categories are:

  • Built Environment
  • Community Well-Being
  • Energy
  • Finance
  • Governance
  • Mobility & Connectivity
  • Waste Management
  • Water

This model of using a scorecard helps to facilitate conversations centered on continued community improvements. The scorecard also acts as a clear baseline for HOAs to create a prioritized roadmap for action.

It is with great pride, that the Town announces that Arapahoe Ridge HOA will be the first HOA to be recognized as a Green Certified HOA in a formal ceremony this summer.
