Weld County Road 5 Improvement Project Begins March 14

Beginning March 14, the Town of Erie will kick off the continuation of the WCR 5 Improvements Project. As a reminder, this project started in the summer of 2021 with utility work in and around the roadway.

The next six phases of work will ultimately increase safety for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists and will improve traffic flow through the area.

Included in the plans for the WCR 5 Improvement Project is to:
• Widen WCR 5 along the whole corridor
• Extend turn lanes where possible
• Add bike lanes along both sides of the roadway
• Extend sidewalks for added pedestrian options
• Add a traffic signal at WCR 5 and Flora View (north entrance to Soaring Heights)

This project is planned to help facilitate better traffic flow and create a safer pedestrian and bicyclist environment. The benefits to completing this project are many, but the Town does understand that the construction period for this project will create significant changes for parents, students, teachers, and community members who regularly commute through this area.

Latest Update:

Today the contractor and the Town determined it was necessary to add a temporary stop sign at the intersection of WCR 5 and Flora View Drive to help with traffic flow. A more sturdy sign will be installed next week. Please be aware of your surroundings and obey all traffic signs including this stop sign and all detour signage. Visit www.erieco.gov/WCR5 for more project details.

Our contractors and engineers anticipated closing that section of the road beginning on Monday, March 14 at 7 a.m. but that closure has been delayed until the evening of the same day – Monday, March 14.

The closure was fully dependent on the paving, striping, and opening of the final stretch of Flora View Drive (stretching east from Horizon Avenue) and that final work on Flora View Drive was delayed due to frigid temperatures and snowy conditions over the last week. The contractor is confident they have only been set back one day’s work and will be able to fully open Flora View Drive and close the Phase 1 section of WCR 5 by the end of the day on Monday.

At this point, no other estimated timelines have been affected, though as with all construction work – weather, supply, and other issues are a possibility and should be anticipated.

The Town of Erie is working closely with St. Vrain Valley School District to provide the most up-to-date information as it becomes available. And SVVSD, in turn, will help to amplify that messaging to their stakeholders at Soaring Heights and Erie High School.
