Activity Notice from CDPHE & EPA

Town of Erie Logo

The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have notified the Town that the owner of property that includes the Neuhauser Landfill, which ended operations in 1969, will begin a waste drum removal on or after December 11, 2017.

This site is located southwest of the intersection of Weld County Road 5 and Weld County Road 6 in Erie. Drums were disposed of on the property in the 1960s and some may contain solvent due to poor operating practices that were legal at that time. The EPA is requiring the property owner to conduct an interim time-critical removal action.

Contractors conducting the removal expect the project to take four to six weeks, weather dependent. Both the EPA and the CDPHE are providing oversight for this removal. There appears to be no risk of exposure or contamination for neighboring houses.

The drum removal work will take place from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. daily beginning on or after December 11. There may be activity visible on the property before this date as contractors begin preparing the site. During the drum removal work there will be continuous air monitoring in place, both directly on site and at an established perimeter. Once excavated, the drums will be stabilized and secured before transport to a hazardous waste disposal facility out of state.

Community Open House
Residents of Erie are invited to a community open house on Monday, December 4th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the court room of the Erie Police Station & Municipal Court Building to learn about this interim removal process. Representatives from the EPA, CDPHE and the current property owner will be at the open house to answer questions and provide more information.
